FAMILY HISTORY

Perley Putman JOHNSTON was born 15 Oct 1858 in Stewiacke, Colchester, Nova Scotia, Canada, to George F and Mary Jane (CORBETT) JOHNSTON.

In 1881, Perley JOHNSTON, 21, lived with his parents in Middle Stewiacke. See 1881 census transcript. Shortly afterwards, he emigrated to the USA.

On 11 Jan 1892, Perley married at Salt Lake City to Florence CONK. They divorced before 1910.

On 7 Jun 1900, Perley and Florence JOHNSTON lived in Silver Bow Co MT. The family comprised: Perley, b Oct 1858 NS CAN, immig 1880, naturalized; marr 7 yrs, stationary engineer, renting on Burlington Rd; Florence, 27, b Jun 1872 UT (parents b NJ & ENG), 3 births; George F, Dec 1893 UT; Ivan R, Nov 1896 MT; Rex, 1mo, b Jul 1899 MT. See 1900 census transcript.

In 1910, Perley and the boys lived in Lemhi County, Idaho. The family comprised: Perly, divorced, lumber camp wagon driver, 51 CAN, immig 1871; George F 16 UT, livery barn servant; Ivin R, 13 MT, stable boy; Rex F, 10 MT. Florence, 37, divorced, was living with her sister Pearl CAVANAUGH (married 2 years to William) in Ocean Park CA, working as a nurse.

On 4 Jun 1918, Ivin R JOHNSTON registered for the draft at Boise ID. He worked for Swift and Co, and reported birth in Elkhorn MT. His father, Perly P, was listed as born in Stewiacke, NS CAN.

In 1920, Perley, 61, is listed as a carpenter, single, in Lemhi County. Ivin, 22, is boarding on Lincoln Ave, Boise, working as a laborer/chauffeur.

On 20 Jun 1923, Ivin Ray JOHNSTON, born 9 Nov 1896 in Elkhorn, Beaverhead, Montana, married Josephine E PHILLIPS at New Plymouth, Idaho. They moved to Cd'A in 1926.

In 1930, the JOHNSTON family lived at 711 Foster, Cd'A, and comprised: Ivin R, 33, wholesale oil sales; Josephine, 27 NE; Eleanor, 6; Robert, 3, and Donald, 1.

Florence (CONK) [JOHNSTON] married after 1919 to (#3) Edward CLIMO (b 1865-70 ENG).
In 1920, Florence M ROSS, 46 UT (parents b NJ, ENG), nurse, lived with Edward CLIMO, 50 ENG, immig 1885, "boarder", RR freight car builder, at 462 Indiana St in Laguna precinct, San Antonio Twp, Los Angeles CA. Edward was a miner in Stent, Tuolumne County in 1903, with wife Rosa. Voter registration also show Edward at 462 Indiana in 1922, and again, with Florence M, "housewife", at that address in 1924 (registered in opposite parties).
In 1930, they lived as CLIMO at 476-1/2 Indiana St in Laguna precinct #1, Montebello Twp, Los Angeles CA. Edward was listed as a carpenter at this address, from 1924 on. Edward CLIMO died 11 Jul 1934, age 63, in Los Angeles county. Florence CLIMO continued to live in Laguna until about 1946, when she switched parties and registered in Santa Monica CA, at 149 Ashland Ave. Florence died 27 Nov 1952 in Stanislaus county, California.

Ivin Ray JOHNSTON died 15 Mar 1959 at Cd'A. Jo died 5 Mar 1995.
Ivin, Josephine, Loree and Robert JOHNSTON are all buried in St Thomas cemetery.
Francis Rex and his wife, Dorothea (TOMLINSON) JOHNSTON, are buried in Forest Cemetery, Cd'A. Perley Putman JOHNSTON is also buried there, in lot E/45/08.

Robert P JOHNSTON, lifelong Coeur d'Alene resident, prominent businessman and entrepreneur, passed away 21 Nov 2007. He was born 31 Aug 1926 to Ivin and Josephine (PHILLIPS) JOHNSTON.

He attended IHM Academy and Gonzaga University. In 1945, he joined the Army Air Corp, trained as a pilot and was honorably discharged at the end of WWII. In 1953, Bob married Michaelyn MYLAN and began raising a family of four children, Marcia '72, Bobby '74, Linda and Shari.

He worked with his father, Ivin, and brother Don establishing the family business, purchasing a number of downtown Coeur d'Alene properties including the Wiggett Estate and the Johnston Building. The JOHNSTON brothers, Don and Bob, worked together leasing and renovating the numerous Johnston properties for more than 50 years until he retired when he was 79 years old. He also owned and operated the Home Furniture Mart and The Lazy Daisy Flower Boutique during the '70s and '80s.

Bob belonged to St Pius Catholic Church. He was on the original board of directors for St Vincent DePaul and active for many years in the Knights of Columbus, as well as a 25-year member of the Eagles.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and working with the Boy Scouts. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, which he felt was the true success of his life.

Bob is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Fern JOHNSTON of Coeur d'Alene; his sister, Eleanor (JOHNSTON '41) SMITH, Cd'A; his son, Robert '74 (Antoinette) JOHNSTON, Poulsbo WA; his daughters, Marcia '72 BINGHAM, Idaho Falls, Linda SKOGEN, Cd'A, Shari (Allen) WILHELM, Spokane; 12 grandchildren and one great grandson. Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Loree WOLFE, and second wife Michaelyn MYLAN (1935-2000). Funeral Mass at St Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St Thomas Cemetery.

HEART ATTACK IS FATAL TO LAKE CITY MAN

Ivin Ray Johnston, 62, a resident of Coeur d'Alene since 1926, died yesterday afternoon in St Luke's Hospital in Spokane. He had been hospitalized since suffering a heart attack a week ago. He had undergone surgery on Jan 15, but apparently was recovering from that when the heart attack occurred. His home was at 711 Foster Ave.

Mr JOHNSTON who was active in construction of Coeur d'Alene General Hospital, came here from Fruitland to enter the wholesale gas and oil business, which he sold to the Reid Brothers in 1931. He then entered the refrigeration and appliance business, and quit that in 1941 to enter the real estate business and was active in that until his death.

He was born in Whitehall MT on 9 Nov 1896 to Perley and Florence (--) JOHNSTON. He was a member of St Thomas parish, the Eagles and American Legion and was a veteran of World War I.

Survivors are his widow, the former Josephine PHILLIPS; two sons, Robert '44 and Donald, both of Cd'A; a daughter, Mrs Eleanor ('41 JOHNSTON) SMITH, Seattle; two brothers, F Rex JOHNSTON, Boise, and George F JOHNSTON, Hayden Lake, and eight grandchildren.

Josephine E JOHNSTON, 92, Cd'A, died Saturday, 4 March 1995 at Pinewood Care Center. She was born 16 Aug 1902 in Stanton NE to Joab W and Eleanor (NOYES) PHILLIPS. She married Ivan R JOHNSTON in 1923 in New Plymouth ID.
She moved to Coeur d'Alene with her husband in 1925. They were in the wholesale gas and oil business.
She was a homemaker, a member of St Thomas Parish and the Catholic Daughters. She was very active in the St Thomas Catholic Bazaar. She enjoyed gardening and was well known for her oil paintings.
She is survived by sons, Don E JOHNSTON and Robert '44 JOHNSTON, both of Cd'A; daughter Eleanor J ('41 JOHNSTON) SMITH, Cd'A; 13 grandchildren including Linda SKOGEN, Terry JOHNSTON, Jody BECK and Tom JOHNSTON of Coeur d' Alene and Tim JOHNSTON of Post Falls; sister Anona J STEIN, Oregon City OR; 18 great grandchildren, three nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1959.
Visitation Tuesday and Wednesday at English Funeral Chapel, Cd'A. Funeral Mass Thursday, March 9, in St Thomas Catholic Church, Cd'A. Burial will follow at St Thomas Catholic Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Catholic Daughters or charity of donor's choice.

Patrick Thomas MYLAN, 1932 ~ 2009

Patrick Thomas MYLAN, 77, resident of Fernley NV, died 30 Nov 2009 at home. He was born in Aberdeen SD on 14 Aug 1932 to Lloyd Thomas and Kathryn (CLEVELAND) MYLAN.
Pat's family moved to Coeur d'Alene from the Dakotas when he was 10 years old. He attended IHM Academy, Coeur d'Alene High School and studied watchmaking at North Idaho College.
In 1953, he was drafted into the Army where he served in Verdun, France, as a teletype mechanic. Upon returning to the states, he moved to Sparks NV and went into business with his father at the Mustang Bar and Sage Trailer Park. In Sparks, he met and married Patricia Lou JOHNSON, daughter of Maurice and Vera JOHNSON, in 1956. He continued as owner of the family business when his father passed on.
Pat is survived by his daughter, Cheryle Lynn SHULL; his son, Dana Patrick MYLAN and three grandsons; his sister, Joisse KNOWLES of Rathdrum; his brother Jim MYLAN of Coeur d'Alene, and nephew & nieces Robert '74, Marcia '72 JOHNSTON, Linda and Shari JOHNSTON.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Patricia; and his sister, Micki JOHNSTON SPAULDING. His funeral and burial took place in Fernley at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
