FAMILY HISTORY

The HERIZA family began in Fremont county, Colorado, but was in Baker County, Oregon about 1908, where they have remained prominent and involved in the community.

Edward HRICZA arrived at Galveston TX on 2 Mar 1902, aboard the SS Cassel from Bremen, Germany. He was age 24, estimated birth year 1877-1878. His last residence was Lozorno (Slovakia). His friend-in-America is listed as Mihaly VALENZ. His destination was Cañon City, Colorado. See Galveston arrivals, Microfilm Roll 2, p 10.

In 1910, the family lived in Baker City OR, and comprised: Edward, 31, farmer; Luize, wife, 28 Bohemia, married 8 years, 3 births, all born in Colorado: Luize, son, 5; John, son, 4; Mary, dau, 2. On this census page (fee req'd) they are indexed as HONZA and HREZA; the entry is also lined out [for being in the wrong precinct]. But the same family is listed again at 505 Washington St, Baker City (fee req'd), indexed as HEIZA and HRIZA. (Son John is the father of IHM graduates Judy and Cathy HERIZA.)

On 28 Jun 1919, Edvurd HRIZA received patent on 120 acres in Baker County, Oregon.

In 1920, the family lived on a farm in Alder Pct, Baker Co OR, and comprised: Edward 40, born Vienna, Austria, farmer, immigrated 1910; Alasie, 39 Bohemia, immig 1901, naturalized 1912; Louis, 15 CO; John, 13 CO; Mary, 12 CO; Rudolph, 8 OR; Sophia, 6 OR; Francis, 4 OR; Elizabeth, 2 OR. View image (fee req'd), indexed as HORIZA.

In 1930, John HERIZA, 24 born in CO (parents b GER), single, was a laborer in a logging camp, in Bear Valley, Grant Co OR. Not a veteran. His brother, [Ru]Dolph, 18 born in OR (parents b Austria), was also a laborer in a logging camp listed on the previous census page. view image (fee req'd). Their brother, Louis C HERIZA, 25 CO (parents b GER), was a RR telegrapher in Durkee, Baker OR.
Edward A HRIZA, 52 of Czechoslovakia, farmed in Baker county, with his wife, Alosie F, age 58 (should be "48") of Czechoslovakia, and children Sophia M, 17 OR, Francis R, 14 OR, and Elizabeth A, 11 OR. The parents claim immigration in 1907, both naturalized; Edward was first married at age 23, Alosie first at age 21. See transcript (free), lines 68-72.

"Powder River!" Mystery solved (Maybe? Probably!)

from Statesman-Journal, Salem OR, 13 Nov 2007
Joe TYLER of Salem may have cleared up a longstanding mystery among West Coast outdoor writers. Tyler called about the column a couple of months ago eulogizing John REGINATO, the longtime manager of the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association in Redding CA, and a good friend, confidante, source, fishing and hunting buddy.
If you recall, the column led with the words "Powder River," an expression that John used a lot. Every outdoor writer who I talked to at John's funeral and memorial service agreed that it was pretty much his signature signoff, but nobody knew why.
Then Tyler called. Seemed his uncle, Rudy HERIZA, used to shout "Powder River!" every time he got a fish strike. "He grew up in the Baker Valley near the Powder River," Joe said. "And I fished with him in the '40s at Diamond Lake, and I picked it up from him." Joe said his fishing buddies remind him about his always shouting "Powder River" when he gets a fish on, and that reminds him about fishing with his uncle at Diamond Lake.
And here's the kicker: "In the late '40s, he lived in Redding," Joe said about his uncle. Although he can't recall Heriza ever mentioning Reginato.
So that's probably it. I'll let the other outdoor writers who were scratching their heads at the memorial service know.
TYLER said the whole discussion, plus the memories of his uncle, make him want to get back to Diamond Lake next summer. So "Powder River," to you, too, Joe. --Henry MILLER
