He grew up in Wyoming and began work in the coal mines at an early age. In 1939, he married Mary McEVOY, who was from Rockwell IA. They moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1942 and had a daughter, Judy '61 (ANDERSON), who married Bob HATHAWAY.
Nels served in the military as a Seabee on Guam during World War II and was recalled to Guam during the Korean War. Nels and Mary moved to Moscow in 1963, and both retired from the University of Idaho.
After 45 years of marriage, Mary died in 1985. They have three grandchildren, Paige (Kris) BIORN, Amy (Dave) SPURLOCK and Rob (Melora) HATHAWAY.
Nels moved to Depoe Bay and enjoyed many fishing friends. He also loved his time as a camp host at Cape Lookout at Beverly Beach State Parks.
In 1995, he met Dolores [KOSACK] HAMM. They married in 1996 and Nels added Diana ELROY and Ed KOSACK (Linda POAGE) as his children; Lisa (Dale) SCHEURING, Chuck and Karilyn ELROY as his grandchildren; and Matt SCHEURING as his first great-grandchild. In the past 12 years Dee and Nels were blessed with 10 more wonderful grandchildren. He was gramps to Halle and Tucker BIORN, Jack, Madison and Ellie SPURLOCK, Peyton and Cooper HATHAWAY; Angela, Stephanie and Dale SCHEURING.
Grandpa "Uncle Nels" is also survived by many nieces and nephews and by his brother and sisters, Oscar ANDERSON, June BABICH, Pearl AGUIRRE and Betty GALASSI.
A Mass and celebration of life will be held at noon Tuesday, 30 Dec 2008 at St Augustine Catholic Church, 1139 NW Hwy 101, Lincoln City OR 97367.
