KASCAK family information


1962 Leo KASCAK

Born 21 Mar 1942 in Pleasant View (Kootenai Co) ID to Stephen Oscar and Margaret Ann (WAKEFIELD) KASCAK. Married 28 Nov 1970 at Spokane to Margaret Fern STEPHENSON [one week after brother Mathew KASCAK married Kathleen Ann STEPHENSON; each couple witnessed the other's marriage.] Leo and Peggy divorced in 2002. Leo worked as a rock-crusher mechanic, and later on the Fire & Rescue staff at Pullman-Moscow Airport. He died of cancer on 16 Mar 2006 at Lewiston ID, according to a Moscow newspaper death notice, although the SSDI claims he died on his birthday, 21 Mar 2006. The Lewiston newspaper had the same dates as the Moscow paper, but listed a funeral on his birthday.

KASCAK FAMILY HISTORY

Leo was one of 14 children born to Stephen & Margaret KASCAK. Several children died young, [including Adrian (1944-1950) and Rose Marie (1952). They are buried in St Thomas cemetery with their parents. Leo's brother, Stephen J "Big Red" KASCAK (1935-1996) of Post Falls, is also buried there. --St Thomas cemetery records, Spokesman-Review obituary.

Margaret Ann WAKEFIELD was born 25 Sep 1907 in Bolivar NY to Ray & Nettie WAKEFIELD, and died 28 Apr 1958. She married Stephen O   KASCAK in late 1929 or the first week of January 1930. --1910, 1930 censuses; St Thomas cemetery records.

Stephen Oscar KASCAK was born 7 Jan 1888 in Pueblo CO to George and Mary E KASCAK, who married c1884. Stephen died 10 Oct 1966, and is buried in St Thomas cemetery.

In 1900, the family lived on a farm in Lincoln Co WA, and comprised: George, born Feb 1852, and Mary born Nov 1852, both in Bohemia; both naturalized, immigrated 1881, married 16 years; 6 children: Steve, b Jan 1888 CO; Annie, b Apr 1890 CO; George, b May 1892 CO; Joe, b Apr 1894 WA; Kate, b Oct 1897 WA; Michael, b Apr 1898 WA. --19 Jun 1900, census image (fee req'd), Lamona Twp, Lincoln county WA.

On 9 Aug 1900, George KASCAK patented 160 acres in S1/2-N1/2-S32-T22N-R35E in Lincoln county WA.

In 1910, the family lived on a mortgaged farm in Stevens Co KS, and comprised: parents Geo J & Mary E, both born in "Austria-Slovenian"; George is naturalized, and now age 60, while Mary is only 48, and they've been married 25 years; children Stephen O, 22 CO, farm laborer; Annie E, 20 CO; George J, 18 CO; Joseph, 16 WA; Katherine, 13 WA; & Michael, 11 WA. --19 Apr 1910, Center Twp, Stevens county KS, ED209 p2A, census image (fee req'd). Joe is also listed as a farm laborer for another family on p 9, line 7 [on May 3].

In 1915, the family was renting a farm in Stevens Co KS, and all except Annie were at home. George is now 66, cannot read or write; Mary is 53, and both claim to be born in Hungary. The family came to KS from WA. --1915 KS state census, census image (fee req'd).

On 15 Jun 1917, Stephen Oscar KASCAK, 29, single, of Lamar CO, registered for the WW1 draft. He was born in Pueblo CO, and farmed his own place "8 miles east of Maxey". He had a crippled hand, and sought exemption. He was not exempted, and was later wounded ("had a kneecap blown off") in the Battle of the Argonne Forest, while serving in the 101 Infantry, 26 Division. His brothers registered in Stevens county KS: George J, b 18 Apr 1893 in Pueblo CO; Joseph P, b 23 Mar 1894 in Downs WA; Mike P, b 28 Jan 1900.

In 1920, Stephen and his brother Mike lived with their parents in Stevens Co KS. George, 70 from Slavokland, speaks Slovak, farmer, immig 1882, naturalized 1890; Mary, 60 Slovakland, immig 1882, naturalized 1890; Stephen, 31 CO, house carpenter; Michael P, 20 WA, farm laborer. --Jan 1920, Center Twp, Stevens Co KS, ED241 p9A census image (fee req'd).

On 2 Feb 1920, Annie E (KASCAK) LIBICH patented 320 acres in W1/2-S28-T34S-R44W in Baca county CO.

On 28 Jul 1920, Stephen O KASCAK patented 320 acres in S1/2-S17-T28S-R47W, in Baca county CO.

In 1930, Stephen O, 42, and his new bride, Margaret Ann (WAKEFIELD), 23 NY, were grain farming in Baca County CO. -21 Apr 1930, North Star precinct, census image (fee req'd). Their first child [of 14] was Mary M, born 8 Oct 1931 in Springfield CO. She married 11 Apr 1953 to John G AMMANN and had nine children. She died 2 Dec 2006 in Spokane, and is buried with five of her children in Holy Cross cemetery. See Mary's obituary. Luiella C KASCAK married Gerald G PEDERSEN (USAF) on 6 Aug 1955 at Spokane, witnessed by Stephen J and Agnes C KASCAK of Post Falls. Leo's uncle, Michael P KASCAK, b Apr 1898, died Jan 1957, is also buried in Holy Cross cemetery.
