OBITUARIES

James Albert HATCH, 1927 - 2007

from Cd'A Press, 19 Nov 2007.
Born September 10, 1927 to Bert and Martha (CASSEDY '25) HATCH in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, passed away November 4, 2007 at his home in Cheney, Washington. Jim graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1945 where he excelled in athletics, playing football and baseball. After high school he went to the University of Idaho on a football scholarship and was a four-year letterman. In 1950 he was drafted into the United States Army where he served two years, most of which in occupied Germany.

After returning to his home town of Coeur d'Alene, he courted and married Betty Huffman whom he had known since she was four as Jim was best friends with her eight older brothers. Jim and Betty were married July 10, 1953.

Jim started his teaching career in Huntington, Oregon where he taught social studies and coached six-man football. Next, he took a teaching position at Harrington, Washington, again teaching social studies and coaching eight-man football along with basketball. After Harrington he moved on to Carnation, Washington, where he taught and coached at Tolt High School until 1964. It was in 1964 that Jim moved to Cheney, a place he would spend the rest of his life as he coached, taught history, became the athletic director, and raised his children who all graduated as Cheney Blackhawks. In 1966 his Blackhawk football team was undefeated. In 1973 he retired from coaching to become the Athletic Director, serving in that position until 1987 and retiring from education in 1988. Throughout his twenty-four years at Cheney High School, Jim was known for a great sense of humor and his positive effect on many young people. Among those was the late Tom Oswald, the quarterback of the undefeated 1966 football team who taught and coached at Cheney High for over 20 years. Even in retirement Jim remained loyal to Cheney High athletics as a fan.

Jim is survived by his wife of fifty-four years Betty, son Jimmy Hatch (Celia), daughter Jana Berg (Cliff), daughter Lori Wyborney (Hank), and daughter Krisann Hatch (James Sloan), grandchildren Kelsey, Cami, Adam, Jenna, Dane, Tatum, H.D., Brett, and Kylie, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Pete Hansen, and brothers Robert and Jack Hatch.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, November 17, 2007 at Cheney High School in the old gym, Reverend Debi Hasdorff presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Cheney High School Haas Foundation in care of Jim Missel, in memory of Jim Hatch. The Haas Foundation provides for scholastic and activity fees for students who are unable to pay.
